Have you considered what it would take to mainstream your clinic?
In our previous newsletter editions, we addressed what the definition of mainstreaming is and mainstreaming spiritual healthcare and what that looks like in practice in the Pregnancy Medical Clinic (PMC).
Have you considered the educational needs and what that would look like in transitioning from your current education plan to a mainstreaming plan?
We’re beginning 2019 with a review of mainstreaming your PMC education. There are various departments or staff members that have education requirements and others that, while they may not require continuing education, in a mainstream setting it would be highly recommended. We’ve highlighted those roles and what organizations monitor their educational requirements.
Below is a list of the medical professions we’ve seen in PMC’s and at least one professional organization that sets their educational standards.
|Medical Profession||Professional Organization|
|RN||State nursing organization
American Nursing Association
State mandated Requirements
ANA Code of Ethics/Lifelong learner
|RDMS||American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (10 CE’s annually or 30 every 3 years)|
|Nurse Practitioner||Many states or employers require nurses to take a number of Continuing Education units (CEU’s) over a certain time period to maintain licensure.|
|Certified Medical Assistant||American Association of Medical Assistants
*There are several national associations and certifications for MA’s. This highlights the most popular.
In order to mainstream your clinic, the educational standards for these professions should be considered in your educational planning. It should also involve conferences that go beyond what is typically promoted on the PMC market. Recognizing the need for a broad scope of education experiences will help lead to building a program to fulfill what you and your team have determined to be important for your organization.
If we use the RN working in the PMC as an example, a mainstream education plan would include well-rounded education experiences to enhance patient care. As an education company, we naturally believe in the strength of our courses. We also appreciate what others have been called to do. Our mainstream education plans include multiple providers from both professional organizations as well as pro-life organizations, such as:
- AWHONN Annual Conference (once every three years)
- AAAHC Conference with ED and CSD (at least once, with or without accreditation plan)
- Innovations in Faith Based Nursing (once every four years)
- SDMS Annual Conference/if RN provides ultrasound exams (frequency TBD)
- Sparrow Solutions Group; Fundamentals of OB, Essentials, Shared Decision Making/Motivational Interviewing in the PMC
- NIFLA webinars
- CareNet Annual Conference (as appropriate)
- Heartbeat Annual Conference (as appropriate)
As a life-affirming organization, including education with a pro-life or life-affirming perspective is imperative. As professionals, including mainstream professional organizations is also vital to keeping up with what is new in healthcare. Combining the two is crucial to your success as a life-affirming mainstream medical clinic.
Sparrow Solutions Group attends the mainstream conferences listed above and meets with those like-minded clinic professionals who are also attending and are interested in debriefing about the sessions. This investment on our part is part of our responsibility to educate those we serve. We combine our life-affirming beliefs with mainstream healthcare information to better partner with you. This partnership builds clinics that exude contemporary professionalism and ideas that meet patient expectations while showing Christ’s love in the relationships developed.
Mainstreaming the education of your medical professionals is vital to becoming a mainstreamclinic. That aspect of organizational development is one more piece of the puzzle of becoming theplace to go for pregnancy confirmations and referrals. In our next edition, we will cover the professional educational recommendations for the Executive Director that mirrors other mainstream non-profit organizations.
For an organization to refer to themselves with integrity as a mainstream clinic, it’s important that the clinic know and understand what that entails and that they are equipped to adequately communicate that message to the community. We are excited to partner with solid healthcare providers working to mainstream their PMC.
Give us a call if you’d like to consult about what it would take to Mainstream Your PMC.
