7 Questions to Ask: Part 2

When Selecting the Best Ultrasound Equipment

Our last edition of The PMC Advisor, we presented an introduction to our Equipment Facilitation Program. The article laid the groundwork for Part 2, 3, 4, and 5 of the series and it will provide you with questions to ask when selecting the best ultrasound equipment for your clinic. Most clinics do not have an experienced sonographer, RDMS, or clinic leader who is versed in ultrasound manufacturers. Therefore, those in place to research and purcahse may know little about selecting the best equipment for the best price. Remember, you don’t need the best system out there, but you do need a good, high quality, mid-range system with a proven track record.
In this article, we will discuss the first 2 questions:

1.  Do you know the manufacturer’s priorities?
2.  Do you know the manufacturer’s strength for sales and service?

1.  Do you know the manufacturer’s priorities?

By priorities, we are referring to the manufacturer’s focus when it comes to imaging. You want to make sure that you are talking to a manufacturer that is strong in Women’s Health. After all, that is your application. To put this in a practical application, it doesn’t make sense to go with a manufacturer known primarily as a cardiac company but dabbles in Women’s Health.

2.  Do you know the manufacturer’s strength for sales and service?

It is advisable to ensure that the manufacturer has a committed program in place and supports the PMC community at large. How does an ultrasound manufacturer demonstrate this commitment? That is answered below, but you may want to add this consideration as you continue reading: Wouldn’t it be comforting to know that the manufacturer or dealer neither sells to nor services abortion clinics? After all, we are all about Life.

Representation is important for both sales and service. It’s imperative to make sure that the manufacturer has a national sales force and service platform, complete with a full inventory of parts, supporting the PMC community. For example, you may not want to buy from a company that only has one individual servicing the PMC nationally. It would be valuable to consider the pros and cons of such an arrangement before a substantial investment is made. Your team may find that such an arrangement is neither practical nor efficient for you, the Customer.

As I build the considerations for you in regards to Equipment Selection, the next on the list that I’ll cover are:

  • Do you know the manufacturer’s strength in technology? Do you know what kind of technology you need?
  • Do you know the value of the warranty?

Stay tuned for the questions 3 & 4 in our next edition.
